New Brooms

The year was 1976, and the location, Sec 1B classroom.

It was during English class. The English teacher asked, "David, what is the meaning of 'New Broom Sweeps Clean?'"

David standing up, "Ah...uh...well, it is like when you have a new maid, she sweeps the floor well?" The whole class roared in laughter.

Untill today I still can't figure out what is so funny about my answer. The teacher did not contradict it. It was our English teacher. I forgot what's her name.
